With the retirement of Mike Crocker last June, Jackson Elementary School has been without a principal. That position is now filled with the hiring of Karen Tavares.

She is coming over from Buffalo, N.Y. where she was an elementary school principal. Tavares is not new to California; she got her start in education teaching elementary school in Oakland.

While Superintendent Carolyn McKennan says she will miss Crocker, she has high praise for the incoming principal.

“Karen is a positive addition to the Morgan Hill School District team,” said McKennan. “Her talent, experience and leadership will benefit the Jackson Elementary community as well as the entire district.”

Aside from teaching and working as a principal, Tavares has also worked on district budgets and assessed and re-designed school budgets. She has also developed child study teams, testing programs, school planning team meetings and community based programs.

“She considers her emphasis to be child-centered and shared decision making involving staff and parents,” said McKennan.
