Takeo Sakahara died Jan. 7 in Gilroy Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center at the age of 89 years.

Born and raised in the Fresno area, he moved to San Jose in 1949, then to Gilroy in 1953. He was a long-time farmer in the Gilroy area growing strawberries, prunes and cucumbers. He also worked as a custodian for the Gilroy Unified School District. He was a longtime member of the San Jose Betsuin.

Sakahara was the father of Alice Sakahara of Gilroy, William (Janet) Sakahara of Mission Viejo, Gene (Kathryn) Sakahara of Gilroy and Dale Sakahara of Great Mills, Maryland; grandfather of Kristin Cummings of Las Vegas, Nev., Robin Sakahara of Berkeley, Karin Kashima of Mission Viejo, Gena Sakahara of Gilroy and Timothy Sakahara of Medford, Oregon; and great-grandfather of Kaitlin Cummings of Las Vegas. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceeded in death by his first two wives, Tsuyako and Maseko and is survived by his current wife, Mary. He was also preceeded by brothers, Kiyoshi, Shigenobu, Shigeto (Frank), Matsukichi and one sister Haruko.

Buddhist Funeral Services were Jan. 11 at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.
