SWIMMING: Bulldogs heading into ST Finals after first dual-meet loss

Santa Teresa Division meet being held Friday and Saturday at
Independence High School
SAN JOSE — The Sobrato boys swim team enters this week’s Santa Teresa Division Finals on the heels of the Bulldogs’ first dual-meet dual-meet loss in more than a year.

The defending Santa Teresa champions fell 87-83 Thursday at Piedmont Hills, dropping to 6-1.

The Bulldogs, still hoping to meet a few Central Coast Section qualifying standards, won five events, including four victories by Adam Jasper.

Jasper won the 500-yard freestyle in five minutes, 25.59 seconds and the 200-yard freestyle in 1:55.80. He also swam with Danny Thompson, Patrick Read and Paul Watts on the first-place 200-yard individual medley (1:49.02) and the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:37.05).

The Sobrato boys can still overtake the Pirates (7-0) if they score higher at league finals, which begin Friday at Independence High School. The championship heats will take place Saturday.

The meet will be the final shot at CCS for several Lady Bulldogs as well.

The Sobrato girls also lost — 88-81 — Thursday at Piedmont Hills, winning five standards in the process.

The day started well, as Christiana Bridges Brittney Doutt, Gabrielle Smith and Kelly Pearman won the 200-medley relay in 2:12.55.

Bridges and Smith followed with victories in the 200-yard freestyle (2:08.93) and 200-yard individual medley (2:32), respectively, and Doutt won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:15.57.

Bridges earned Sobrato’s final win the 500 freestyle, clocking a section-qualifying time of 5:33.30. The freshman will likely swim the 500- and 50-yard freestyle at CCS, which will take place May 21-22 at the Santa Clara International Swim Center.
