San Jose – The Silicon Valley Leadership Group has formally endorsed Measure A, a controversial land conservation initiative slated for the Nov. 7 ballot.
If passed, Measure A would limit development in certain rural and hillside areas of the county.
“The Leadership Group has a long and strong history of support for open space measures, dating back to the 1990 Open Space measure in Santa Clara County, when our founder David Packard personally led his Board colleagues on a nature hike to underscore the importance of open space to the health of our companies and the quality of life of our employees,” said Carl Guardino, President and CEO of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, in a written statement.
The Silicon Valley Leadership Group represents senior managers of some 200 companies. The group’s mission is to address major public policy issues affecting the economic health and quality of life in Silicon Valley.
Measure A qualified for the ballot after environmentalists, including the Sierra Club, Audubon Society, Greenbelt Alliance and Committee for Green Foothills gathered more than 58,000 valid signatures.
Opponents of the measure, including the Santa Clara County Farm Bureau and Gilroy Chamber of Commerce, argue the measure will reduce property values and is overly broad in its approach.
