The Live Oak senior scored 28 points for South Valley in a regular-season ending 63-5 victory over San Francisco-Golden Gate on April 13 at the Outdoor Sports Center.

The South Valley Bucks blasted Alameda 63-5 and recorded their highest point total of the season April 13 at the Outdoor Sports Center.

It was a solid end to the regular season for the Bucks (9-6, 4-4), who open the Bay South playoffs against San Francisco-Golden Gate on Saturday at Treasure Island.

South Valley lock Vince Fanua of Sobrato High School opened the scoring with a try at the three-minute mark. Fanua added a second try after 12 minutes of play on a powerful run from a 5-meter scrum. Alameda answered with a try at the 19-minute mark, narrowing the score to 10-5 in favor of South Valley.

The Bucks again asserted themselves, scoring two more tries, one each by scrum half Mitch Marcum (Live Oak) and center Austin David (Live Oak). David’s try came as time expired in the first half. Marcum converted his try, and South Valley had a comfortable 22-5 lead at the break. Marcum and David opened the second half in a positive way. Both scored a try in the first eight minutes.

Playing into the wind, Alameda was never able to mount much of a scoring threat in the second half. South Valley dominated possession, field position and scoring.

Fanua and Marcum tallied two more tries apiece to give them four tries on the night. Bucks prop Ruben Magana also scored a try, and Marcum added three more conversions, giving him 28 points on the night.

The Bucks started a trio of freshmen in the back line – wing Chase Weirshauser (Valley Christian), center Chris McHenry (Live Oak) and standoff Clay Miller (Live Oak). All three played well, as did senior flanker and captain Andrew Daggett and junior flanker Devon Jones (Live Oak).

Saturday’s playoff is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. In their previous meeting, South Valley beat San Francisco-Golden Gate 27-19 during league play.
