I thought one of the reasons for these HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) lanes was to encourage fuel efficiency as well as lower emissions. Here’s a solution to the “traffic nightmare” concern of some related to allowing hybrids in the HOV lanes. Penalize those ridiculously large SUV’s and trucks, which use more fuel and cause more congestion, by not allowing them to use the HOV lanes even if they have more than one person in them.
They don’t deserve carpool rights, because no matter how many people ride in them they still produce more emissions and get lower fuel mileage than a hybrid with one person. Let hybrids use the HOV lanes with only one passenger and encourage the responsible and sane use of our natural resources.
