Live Oak’s Connor Sutton overcame a rough outing against Gilroy
to get the victory and score the game-winning run Thursday in a 9-8
triumph over King City
MORGAN HILL — Live Oak’s Connor Sutton bounced back a rough outing against Gilroy to get the victory and deliver the game-winning run Thursday in a 9-8 triumph over King City.
Sutton reached on an error in the seventh inning and scored from first base on a Tony Austin double to the left-field corner at Sarich Field.
The Acorns improved to 13-7 overall heading into Tuesday’s division showdown with rival Sobrato.
Two days after surrendering six runs in the final two innings of a 7-6 loss to Gilroy, Sutton (6-1) was back to his old self. The senior closer struck out two and gave up a pair of runs — both unearned — on two hits in three innings.
Sutton helped quiet the pesky Mustangs (8-13), who led 4-2 after the second inning and 8-6 midway through the sixth. The Acorns tied the game four times — and did not lead until Austin’s double off Rory Johnson (2-5).
King City chased Live Oak starter Ken Hall after two innings, scoring on two errors, a walk and a passed ball. The Acorns knotted the score, 2-2, in the first on back-to-back RBI singles by Michael Schreiber and Dylan Davis. They made it 4-4 in the third with Hall’s run-scoring single to right and Cody Casino’s squeeze bunt that brought home Rich Martinez.
Darrell Sinclair’s RBI double and Matt Ramon’s run-scoring single pushed the Mustangs ahead 6-4 in the fourth. But Live Oak pulled even again in the bottom half on an RBI single by Schreiber and a sacrifice fly hit by Martinez. Jeff Stein drove in a run to help tie it in the sixth.
The Acorns outhit King City 13-8. Davis finished 3-for-4 batting, and Schreiber, Casino and Austin went 2 for 4. Casino collected three RBIs.
Hall, who came in for Stein after the second, struck out two and yielded four hits and one earned run in two innings.
