Tyler Sadoff, a 17-year-old senior at Live Oak High School, is this week’s “Student of the Week.”
What inspires you?
The martial art I participate in, Shinkendo, is what inspires me. Through this martial art I learn both the traditional techniques of Japanese swordsmanship, and also of the philosophies and principals the Samurai used to follow. This has shaped me into who I am today, and inspires me to try my best at all that I do, getting the most out of each day.
What is your favorite subject in school, and why?
My favorite subject in school is history because I am intrigued by the stories of the past and how it has shaped our future.
If you had the power to change one thing in the world, what would it be?
If I could change one thing in the world I would make sure everyone is seen as equals and end discrimination based on gender, ethnicity, or beliefs.
If you could go anywhere, where would you go?
If I could go anywhere I would go to Japan. I love Japanese culture and I would really love to visit Japan and see its historical sites and modern cities.
Name one big challenge in your life right now:
A big challenge in my life right now is preparing for college. It has been a long, stressful process of filling out applications, getting letters of recommendation, and applying to scholarships. I have already sent in my UC and Common App applications so I am very relieved to have completed part of this challenge.
What is your dream job?
My dream job would be combining my interests of video games and history. I would want to create historical-themed games that combine entertainment as well as learning.
What are your three favorite things?
My three favorite things would include: sushi, classic cars, and my martial art of Shinkendo.
Favorite book:
My favorite book is “World War Z” by Max Brooks.
What do you want to do after high school?
After high school I want to attend a four-year university, particularly USC. I hope to pursue a major in game design and/or history.
Something that makes you smile:
Practicing and performing the martial art of Shinkendo makes me smile as it allows me to relieve my stress and it has enveloped me in a culture I have fallen in love with, shaping my characteristics and personality.
