Finding ways to stand up during your day can promote your health and comfort.
Sitting is becoming one of the latest health villains. While sitting in a good posture can be good for us, sitting too many hours a day has been shown to increase the risk of some health problems. Prolonged sitting, especially in improper postures, can also increase the risk of pain. Here are six ways to incorporate standing into your work day.
1. Hold a standing meeting.
2. Stand while talking on the phone. You may also take this opportunity to walk (in place or around the office).
3. If reading paper documents, stand up and view them on a document holder that you’ve placed just below eye level on a bookcase or file cabinet.
4. If writing on paper documents (a rare occurrence in some offices these days), use a work surface that places the documents at a comfortable height a couple of inches above your standing elbow level.
5. When using a mobile device, prop it up for easy viewing on a mobile device stand, and place that stand on a surface whose height allows YOU to stand comfortably. Add a book or other stable item as needed, to get the height just right.
6. If you have the resources, invest in a sit-stand desk or add-on product that enables you to easily move the computer between seated and standing positions. Consider desks or products from Ergotron, WorkRite, Humanscale, Steelcase, Conset Herman Miller and other manufacturers.
If you plan to spend more time standing, be sure to use good posture and sensible, supportive shoes. Take time to build your tolerance. Any new activity will place new demands on your body. If you are having pain or other problems, check with your medical professional.
