Morgan Hill – The season didn’t get started the way the Sobrato High girls volleyball team had hoped Monday as the Bulldogs fell to St. Francis-Watsonville 25-15, 25-18, 25-15.

“We’ve still got a lot of work to do. The passes weren’t there today,” Sobrato head coach Rosemary Miller said.

Sobrato (0-1) won’t have to wait long to try to regain some confidence. The Bulldogs play twice more this week, including Wednesday against Andrew Hill.

“We’ll just go back and correct our mistakes and hopefully Wednesday we’ll come a little bit better,” Miller said.

Sobrato played the Sharks (2-1) even through most of the first game and when freshman Kelsey Westall served an ace, the Bulldogs pulled to within 12-10.

But St. Francis took over from there, scoring 13 of the next 18 points to come away with the Game 1 win.

The second game went in a similar fashion. Senior outside hitter Jordyn Hanne recorded a kill to tie the game at 7-7 and later served a pair of points to help Sobrato tie the score again at 11-11.

St. Francis took a 20-14 lead, but the Bulldogs fought back with four straight points to narrow the deficit to 20-18. Unfortunately for Sobrato, the Sharks rattled off five straight points and sophomore Katherine Brown slammed home a kill to secure Game 2 for St. Francis.

Game 3 appeared to be going Sobrato’s way early on as it burst out to an 11-7 lead.

But the Sharks again toughened up. They took control with a 13-0 run and eventually finished off the Bulldogs when sophomore Rochelle Welsh served an ace on match point.

“I supposed it could be good in a sense,” assistant coach Kevin Miller said. “It’s good sometimes to take a step back and see how much further we still have to go.”

Sobrato’s junior varsity season also kicked off Monday with a game against St. Francis. The Bulldogs earned a two games to one victory, 19-25, 25-20, 15-10.
