The OVYSL Girls Class 3 U13 Fury Finishes at 9-1

The OVYSL Girls Class 3 U13 Fury captured the division title capping the regular season with a 5-1 victory over the NVYSL Pink Panthers at the Morgan Hill soccer complex.

Five minutes into the game, Nicole Gonzales broke from mid-field, took the ball to the left corner, and arched the ball over the Panther goalie to the right net for a 1-0 lead.

Minutes later, Anna Molyneux made a perfect lead pass to Alex Maldonado. Maldonado quickly passed to Gonzalez, allowing Maldonado to speed by the Panther defender to receive a pass back and subsequent shot to the right net for a 2-0 lead.

The Fury broke out to a 3-0 first half lead when Lauren Bertero, from the left corner, angled the ball toward the left post. An opportunistic Maldonado kicked the goal from a rebound off the Panther goalie. The Panthers closed out the first half with a goal to make it 3-1.

The Fury defense was solid and steady. One sequence had left fullback Mariette Lowe guarding a Panther. Sweeper Lauren Drewniany came up to assist, with Lowe dropping back to thwart the Panther attack in a common Fury example of excellent team defense.

Mid-fielders Cassandra Valenzuela, Jennifer Protsman, Aubrey Young and Kelly Foster made several excellent clears to turn back the Panthers. Defenders Mika Matsumoto and Emily Mandel clamped the Panthers off the right corner with Mandel also having a brief and effective stint at the stopper position.

Allison Troini turned in another outstanding performance as goalie.

The Fury opened the second half when Maldonado dropped a pass back to Gonzalez who made another soaring kick over the Panther goalie’s outstretched hands to the right net for a 4-1 lead. Forward Lauren Hunsaker had a number of close shots on goal pressuring the Panther defense. The game’s final score occurred when Alyssa Gummow made a powerful right corner kick to Maldonado.
