An offensive explosion carried the Live Oak High baseball team to victory in the opener of a doubleheader in the Wilcox Tournament at Archbishop Mitty High last weekend. But there was no offense left for the second game.
In Saturday’s first game, LO beat Saratoga 11-6 on the strength of a pair of five-run innings. But the Acorns were shut down by Mitty ace Jason Codiroli in Game 2, losing 3-0 despite a fine complete-game effort from junior Kyle Mosbrucker.
“We’ve faced (Codiroli) every year since he’s been there and we’ll be glad when he graduates,” LO coach Mark Cummins said. “But Mitty’s a very strong team so we’re very pleased because we feel like we can play with anybody.”
Despite the loss, the two-game split was good enough to get LO into the consolation bracket of the Wilcox tourney, as the locals were one of eight out of 10 teams to remain alive.
The Acorns play Santa Clara today at 4:30pm at Washington Park, then play either Lynbrook or Palo Alto on Friday at the same venue.
In Saturday’s first game, LO (2-1) scored five runs on three walks and two errors by Saratoga in the third, then came back with five more in the fourth behind an RBI double by Andrew Cummins, and RBI singles by Mosbrucker, Shayne Christman and Michael Marquez.
Kyle Ferguson started and picked up the win, while John Stemel went four innings to finish up.
In the second game, Mosbrucker allowed just two earned runs on six hits, while striking out four against the talented Monarchs.
Cummins said Codiroli, a senior left-handed pitcher and outfielder, is headed to Cal State Fullerton after he graduates.
