Showing its versatiltiy and resilience against tough opponents on back-to-back nights, the Live Oak High boys volleyball team dispatched two more Tri-County Athletic League challengers last week.
The Acorns improved to a perfect 9-0 and solidified their hold on first place in the league standings with victories over Palma on Tuesday and Seaside on Wednesday.
Live Oak (17-3 overall) hadn’t played a match since a victory over Alisal on April 6 before this week but were forced to play on back-to-back nights when last week’s league match at Palma was postponed.
Against Palma, the layoff showed a little, as the Acorns dropped the second game to the Chieftains en route to a 25-18, 26-28, 25-16, 25-18 victory. But Live Oak coach James Uthes said the team responded to a mid-match lecture in time to earn the win. Royce Newcomb had 20 kills and Chris Deem added 16 kills for the Acorns.
Against a scrappy Seaside team, Live Oak’s usually dominant hitting game was stymied by the hustling Spartans. But a stellar service effort and a strong blocking game led the way to a 20-25, 25-6, 25-16, 25-14 win.
Tonight, Live Oak plays at second-place Monterey, which lost to Hollister this week to fall two games behind the Acorns.
