Jim Blean called and said there was an event called A Day on the Lake at Coyote Lake on Thursday in which the San Jose Firefighters Union Local 230 hosts kids in wheelchairs for a full day of fun and excitement—climbing rock walls, boating and inner tubing.

I stopped by for lunch and ran into a few old friends and coworkers, Scott Fey and Shawn Tacklind. Also there were Gilroy resident Chris Salcido the SJFD PIO, as well as Barry Arata and Frank Ryan, who worked together to plan the event. It’s been years since I’ve been to Coyote Lake and being there reminded me that I need to get back there for some hiking and picnicking soon!

Another first this year for the Sports Camp was Mark Wellman of No Limits Tahoe, a paraplegic athlete himself and an avid rock climber, who hosted a day at Columbus Park in San Jose. The kids actually go to climb the wall with the help of volunteers and camp counselors.

Later, I was out at Gilroy Gardens for the launch of Lumination, and it’s absolutely phenomenal. The Chinese Consulate General gave a speech along with Mayor Perry Woodward. Barb Granter and her crew and Kat Filice from Articulate Solutions did an amazing job promoting this event.

We had delicious Chinese cuisine cooked on site by Chef Duy and his peeps. Don’t miss this event that goes through November 27.It’s only the third exhibit of its kind in the United States and the first on the West Coast.
