It was cold, windy, getting dark, dust was everywhere and did I mention cold?
None of that mattered to Sobrato and Oak Grove who were locked in an epic battle that needed 12 innings and 13 combined runs to finally decide.
And on senior night, it was a freshman who came through with the big plays to secure the game.
Lexi Parish had the game-winning RBI double to walk off with two outs in the 12th 7-6.
As epic as a walk off double can be, it might have been outdone by her play just a half inning before to potentially save the game from advancing further and set up the dramatics.
Thanks to the international tie breaker rules, Oak Grove had a runner on second in the top of the 12th. A bunt single put runners on first and second when a line drive was hit to left field.
Parish made the catch and immediately looked to the infield where she saw Gabriella Belyeu taking a little bit too much of a lead off of second.
Belyeu was slow getting back to the base and Parish fired a laser into second for two outs.
Despite Oak Grove drawing a two out walk to return to two on, a popup to third ended the inning.
Ashley Burke stood on second to lead off the 12th and watched the first two hitters strike out as part of 15 that the Bulldogs suffered in the game.
But Parish made sure she got her bat around on a pitch and sent it to the right field corner allowing Burke to speed around third and score without a throw.
The Sobrato dugout came pouring out of the dugout, dropping their blankets they used to keep warm and swarmed Parish on the base paths.
It ended a relative pitcher’s duel between Megan Perron and Oak Grove’s hurler.
Perron got the win, giving up six runs, four earned, on 13 hits and nine runs with nine strikeouts.
Her counterpart gave up seven runs, six earned, on 14 hits and one walk with 15 strikeouts.
Parish went 3-7 with a run and two RBIs to lead the Bulldogs with Ally Nodohara going 2-6 with a run and two RBIs. Perron went 2-5 with an RBI and Mari Mestaz went 2-5 with two runs. Burke went 0-6 but scored three runs, two coming in extra innings after getting placed on second through the tie breaker rule.
The Eagles took a 3-0 lead going to the bottom of the third and were promptly outscored 4-1 in the next four and a half innings to send the game into extras.
Oak Grove opened the scoring when back-to-back leadoff walks led to a run thanks to a passed ball in the second inning.
The Eagles made the game 3-0 when a lead off single kicked off four singles in five batters that turned into two runs.
Sobrato finally got on the board when Burke led off the third reaching on an error at second.
She went to third on a single from Mestaz and came around to score on a single from Kendall McGowan.
Parish pushed the game to 3-2 when she doubled to score Mestaz.
Parish tied the game in the fifth when she led off the inning with a single and stealing her way to third.
She finally scored when Perron singled with two outs to tie the game 3-3.
Oak Grove, however, took the lead again in the top of the sixth thanks to a one-out walk followed by an error at second that put runners on the corners.
That led to a run on an infield single to put the Eagles up 4-3.
Sobrato threatened in the bottom of the sixth when Kacey Suess led off with a single and Burke reached on an error at third to put two on.
Mestaz moved both into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, but Sobrato wasn’t able to bring them home.
Sobrato got revenge in the bottom of the seventh when Nodohara led off with a single.
Perron followed with a one out single setting up Bella Romani laying down a remarkable suicide squeeze that scored Nodohara and sent the game into extras.
Neither team scored in the eighth or ninth despite Oak Grove leading off the ninth with a double.
After a walk put two on with no outs, the Bulldogs got out of the inning thanks to a fly ball to left and a Perron to Samantha Brenny to Nodohara for a 1-5-3 doubleplay.
