Morgan Hill – The celebration is over for the Sobrato High football team and now it’s time to get back to work.
Coming off the first win of the season and the first win of the Dan Brown coaching era, the Bulldogs know they can’t lose concentration when they host Prospect tonight in their Homecoming game.
The Panthers are fresh off a 35-0 whooping of James Lick last week in their Blossom Valley Athletic League West Valley Division opener and the 7pm showdown at Live Oak High will pit a pair of teams looking for a 2-0 start to league play.
“Prospect’s a good team,” Brown said. “They come in with a big strapping quarterback, a couple of hard running backs. They’re a good looking team, they’re solid.”
Zach Stevenson, the Panthers’ 6-foot, 193-pound senior quarterback, has been solid to start the season. He’s completed nearly 70 percent of his passes for 509 yards and five touchdowns. His main weapon, 6-2 senior wide receiver Kendall Hendon, has caught 22 passes for 357 yards and three touchdowns.
But this week will be about Sobrato keeping up the momentum after last week’s 28-12 defeat of San Jose High Academy. The Bulldogs racked up 352 yards rushing, led by the 115 yards of senior running back Erik Woodruff and 88 yards of Ramon Watkins. Sophomore quarterback Erick Levell also made his first appearance of the season after sitting out the first three games with a broken thumb and was a spark with 72 yards rushing and a touchdown.
The general consensus after last week’s win was that it was a definite confidence booster, and a good reward for the team’s efforts thus far.
“It pumps us up real good,” Woodruff said. “After all the hard work we put in, we all deserve it.”
Brown is hoping that the Homecoming festivities won’t get in the way of his team’s primary goal – getting a victory.
“Hopefully our kids can stayed focused because sometime’s it’s a distraction,” Brown said.
