The Sobrato Bulldogs took a bite out of the Live Oak Acorns Monday in early preseason action defeating their cross-town rivals 51-35.
Boasting four 2006-07 All-League players in guards Melissa Cachopo, Shaealyn Kunze, Courtney Sedlak and forward Michelle Bradley, the Bulldogs used pressure to
to force turnovers and jump out to an early lead.
Cachopo, a sophomore, was last season’s team MVP and also the division freshman of the year.
On Monday Cachopo scored seven points while setting the tempo for the Bulldogs.
“Melissa has set the bar really high as far as conditioning and off season workouts,” Sobrato head coach Rodney Tabares said. “And she can get to the basket at will.”
After finishing the 2006-07 season in second place in the C Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League with a record of 18-8, the Bulldogs were the first team chosen to move up to the B Division for the 2007-08 season.
Sophomore Laura Billos led the Bulldogs with 14 points.
Live Oak head coach Jeff Perkins was happy with the effort his team put forth in their first game of the season. “We’re coming together and I thought the girls played hard,” Perkins said. “We turned the ball over too much and that was a product of Sobrato’s pressure.”
Despite giving the Bulldogs opportunities for easy buckets, Live Oak is still getting to where they want to be.
“There’s a lot that we can build on, and I’ve got good athletes out there who work hard. I’m very confident that’ well continue to improve.”
All but two players on the Live Oak team played fall sports, so the Acorns are off to a little bit slower at the start than Perkins would like.
“I’m very optimistic about where we’ll be when league starts,” Perkins said. “We have a pretty good preseason schedule and that will help us get game ready but the key is just coming together as a team.”
