Evidently, the Sobrato girls have short memories.
“We told the girls to forget about last year,” said Bulldogs softball coach Rob Piper. “We have instilled confidence in the girls and have told them to believe that they can win.”
Count Sobrato as believers after its second Blossom Valley Athletic League Santa Teresa Division win, 3-1, over host Independence.
“We played strong defense and continued to put the ball in play on offense,” Piper said of the Bulldogs (3-5), who improved their league record to 2-0.
Junior Casey Post made her second BVAL start and got her second win. Post had 10 strikeouts and allowed only a fourth-inning run. Post developed a good rhythm for the game but also got help from her defense as CeCe Hollis made a game-saving catch at first with the bases loaded.
The Bulldogs gave Post some run support as well with Frankie Kellett collecting two hits that led to two RBI’s. Hollis also got into the act offensively, getting on base with a single while scoring one of the three runs for Sobrato.
The Bulldogs were in control after a two-run second inning and added an insurance run in the fifth inning.
It was Sobrato’s second straight win after a challenging preseason that Piper said was put together “on purpose so the girls get a better picture of what they need to do in league.”
Sobrato hosts Branham in a BVAL contest at 3:30pm Wednesday.
