A few days after a formal request was lodged with the Morgan Hill School District by Live Oak High football coach Glen Webb, Sobrato High Athletic Director Dennis Martin revealed the new high school’s first football schedule this week.
But Martin said the 10-game schedule’s release and Webb’s request were not related and said he had not been asked by Webb to release the schedule.
Webb said he sent a formal letter to district officials requesting the schedule under the Freedom of Information Act because of the number of questions he was getting, and anticipating, as the spring high school football season approaches.
“People ask me around town what’s going on with the (Sobrato football) program and I wanted to have an answer,” Webb said.
Webb added that if Sobrato didn’t have a full 10-game schedule then the school board should address related student access to equal school-related programs issues.
Webb indicated in his letter to the district that he had heard Martin had been unable to schedule more than three or four games.
But Martin said the last time he talked to Webb about the status of the football schedule was in January when only three or four games had been scheduled.
Plans call for Sobrato to field a frosh-soph football team only in its first year and play an independent schedule against freshman football teams and one junior varsity team.
In its second year, Sobrato would add a varsity football team and play a Tri-County Athletic League schedule.
Sobrato has already been accepted into the Centyral Coast Section as a member school, according to Commissioner Nancy Lazenby Blaser.
Sobrato, with the Bulldog as its mascot, will play all its home games at Live Oak High’s football stadium. The Bulldogs would only play home games when Live Oak plays on the road.
According to its 2004 schedule, Sobrato will play its first season opener at Live Oak against visiting North Monterey County on Saturday, Sept. 11.
Sobrato has a total of four home games and six road games.
The rest of the schedule is as follows:
Friday, Sept. 17 vs. Seaside at Live Oak
Saturday, Sept. 25 at Alvarez
Thursday, Sept. 30 at Monterey
Friday, Oct. 8 at vs. Hollister-San Benito at Live Oak
Thursday, Oct. 14 at Terra Nova
Thursday, Oct. 21 vs. Pacific Grove at Live Oak
Thursday, Friday or Saturday, Oct. 28, 29 or 30 at Alameda
Saturday, Nov. 6 at Saratoga
Friday, Nov. 12 at Watsonville junior varsity
Martin said all 10 opponents have been confirmed. He said specific game times have not been set and will be confirmed when the most convenient time for the teams involved is determined.
Martin said the team will travel by carpool or by bus, depending on the size of the squad at the players’ expense.
