On Wednesday, the San Jose Earthquakes announced the promotion of former assistant coach Dominic Kinnear to the position of head coach.

Kinnear will assume the franchise’s reins immediately as the Quakes prepare for the MLS SuperDraft on Friday.

Kinnear, 36, has spent the past three seasons as the Quakes’ top assistant coach, helping guide the team to a pair of MLS Cup titles.

As the team’s top assistant coach, Kinnear worked closely with previous head coach Frank Yallop to organize daily training sessions, while also coordinating the team’s professional and collegiate scouting efforts. Yallop resigned his position in December to coach the Canadian national team.

Kinnear was born in Scotland in 1967 and grew up in Fremont, where he led John F. Kennedy to back-to-back state titles.

San Jose opens its season April 10.
