Around the Water Cooler

Should the school board offer Steve Betando, the interim superintendent of Morgan Hill Unified School District, a 3-year contract to become permanent superintendent?
• Jonathan Brusco: Yes. After years of service to MHUSD as both Assistant Superintendent as well as interim, Mr. Betando has established his devotion to the community and the district, its students, and its teachers. There are a number of items of concern to the district that will evolve over the next three years including the common core roll out, charter school approvals, and a growing population base and knowing that your superintendent will be there throughout that process is very important.
• Julian Mancias: No. The MHUSD Board of Trustees needs to open up the search for a new superintendent. Since more than 50 percent of the students in MHUSD are Latino, the board must make a concerted effort to locate qualified Latino candidates. At the minimum, one of the three finalists should be a Latino.
• Rene Spring: The Morgan Hill Unified School District should choose the best candidate for our school district. We need the best person for this job – someone who will help ensure that our kids will get the best education possible, the best teachers teaching, the best school staff, and the best schools in general. Whoever it will be, she or he will need our community’s support! Having said that, I wish all our students, teachers, school staff, and Steve, Happy Holidays!
• Swanee Edwards: I have never met this man, nor do I know much about him. Our local schools are facing some daunting challenges, and I would hope that our Board of Trustees has a good idea about where Mr. Betando will take the MHUSD. I will say that we need a person to lead the district to commit to a long-term relationship. The turnover is not good for the kids.
• David Cohen: Yes. Bertando knows the school and the district. No reason to spend money on the proverbial nationwide search to find someone when one is already here.
• Matt Wendt: No. I disagree with his opinion and handling of Navigator Schools’ petition to open a charter school in Morgan Hill. I think Navigator Schools has shown enough success locally to warrant strong consideration instead of having been seemingly dismissed outright. I do agree with his opposition to Rocketship Charter Schools’ petition for another charter school which appears to me to be a massive out-of-state operation with no local ties or success.
• Karen Anderson: No. I don’t think there is anything that distinguishes his job from anyone else’s at his level in industry. What happens is that the board is set up to pay a golden parachute if he does not work out. I think that is wrong in the public sector, though common for city managers as well. How is this policy in the public interest?
• Kathy Sullivan: Since it is the one of the most important jobs a school board has to choose the superintendent who will carry out the shared vision and mission of the district, they are the best ones to determine the answer to this question. Steve Betando has had ample opportunities to demonstrate to the board if it is a good fit. If they have the right man, save the money of a search firm and move forward.
