I’m writing in response to the story in Tuesday’s paper headlined “Recall backers host meeting with teachers.” It seems to me that Victoria Battison and her group CARE, or Community Alliance for Responsible Education should practice a little responsible mathematics. Their effort to make our district a better place for education just doesn’t add up.
To think anyone can benefit from this recall effort given the current budget crisis facing our School District is ludicrous. Battison and CARE organized the meeting with 15 teachers attending (aren’t there about 400 teachers district-wide?) because they wanted to, “present facts on a wider scale,” and to share, “correct information out to the teachers.”
OK, lets look at the facts.
Fact: the estimated $300,000 a special election would cost the district from its general operating fund will not contribute to the cost of repairing and maintaining the facilities at Live Oak, nor to the opening of Sobrato, nor to augment the district’s major budget shortfall.
Fact: the special election as outlined in the article would occur 30-45 days before the regularly scheduled election. What is the benefit? What is the perk for the price tag? I agree with Battison that “the teachers are suffering in the current atmosphere of the district.” However, this is partly due to narrow-minded groups such as CARE that push their agenda at any cost and with little consideration for the majority of teachers or the community as a whole.
The recall effort is irresponsible and should not be supported by any members of our community. CARE should take a long hard look at its mission statement because the thought process for justifying this recall defies logic and reason.
