Although the Live Oak soccer team played tough against Santa Clara, two goals one minute apart led to a 2-0 loss.
With the loss, the Acorns fall to 0-2-2.
Coach Tony Goble said he had to deal with a couple of injuries on defense, including to center defenseman Robert Adams.
“We pushed Sheldon (Steenhuis) up to see what would happen with him out of center mid,” Goble said. “It was obvious we were in trouble.”
In the second half, Santa Clara was able to exploit the lineup change and in the 65th and 66th minutes of the game, they were able to hit the back of the net.
“Other than that, they played pretty well,” Goble said.
But Goble said the team still needs to find a consistency on offense.
“We still are finding that offensive piece to the puzzle,” Goble said.
Goble, however, gave credit to Santa Clara, who he said will be a top contender in the De Anza League – the ‘A’ division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
“They are probably one of the top two teams in that league,” Goble said.
sequoia 4, sobrato 0
Missing one of its top players, the Sobrato boys soccer team fell 4-0 to Sequoia on Tuesday in the Homestead Tournament.
Coach Ricardo Martinez said the Cherokee played a fast game that over matched the slower play of his boys.
“Their speed of play was much faster,” Martinez said. “They played a good game of possession.”
The Bulldogs (3-2-1) hung with Sequoia for the majority of the first half, but yielded two goals in the latter minutes of the game.
The first came on a cross in front of the net that was bounced around and eventually headed in by the Cherokee. The second goal came nine minutes later on a through ball that Sequoia was able to get past the Bulldog defense and into the net.
Sequoia added to its lead early in the second half, scoring on a penalty kick within the first nine minutes.
They capped off the scoring with a goal in the 28th minute of the half.
Martinez said he was missing Arturo Cejas, who has emerged as a scoring threat for the Bulldogs, which led to Sequoia taking more control over the game.
“We had a break down in the middle,” Martinez said.
Martinez said Sequoia is a really good team that just kept his players off balanced.
“They are a strong team,” Martinez said. “We dribbled the ball more than them. They passed the ball more. They made passes rather than beating the defense.”
The loss comes on the heels of a 3-2 win over the weekend against Cupertino where the Bulldogs nearly gave up a 3-0 first half lead.
In that game, Martinez said his team was too relaxed, allowing Cupertino to come back.
