Jose G. Ojeda, 66 of San Martin, died in the traffic accident north of Morgan Hill that snarled the morning commute Monday.
Ojeda’s identity was confirmed by the Santa Clara County Coroner’s office Tuesday. He died about 10:50 a.m. at San Jose Regional Hospital, where he was transported by paramedics from the scene of the two-vehicle collision.
The accident happened about 8:11 a.m. on the northbound side of U.S. 101, just south of Coyote Creek Golf Drive, according to reports from the California Highway Patrol.
Ojeda was driving a blue 1988 Toyota Corolla when he turned left from the right land for an unknown reason, authorities said. His car continued westbound across the freeway when it was struck by a blue Lexus sport-utility vehicle.
Ojeda was the only occupant of the Toyota, police said. He was reportedly unconscious at the scene, and was taken by ambulance to San Jose Regional Hospital.
He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital, police said.
Two people – both 59 of Dallas, Texas – suffered minor injuries in the Lexus, police said. Nancy Albertini, the passenger, was taken to San Jose Regional Center with a complaint of neck pain. Steven Metzger was treated and released at the scene.
Police do not think alcohol or drugs were a factor in the accident.
