A crew of local riders from the San Martin 4-H showed off their
skills at the California 4-H Horse Classic last month. Held July
20-24 at the Murieta Equine Complex, the event featured about 500
of the top 4-H equestrians in the state. Competitors qualified for
the event by finishing in the top three at a County 4-H show. Among
the local riders who competed at the event were Cobbie Jones,
Ashley Budde, Danielle Budde, Ashley Ferguson, Elyse Amadeo, Erin
Schlegel, Jessica Moore and Tula Urban.

Among the local riders who competed at the event were Cobbie Jones, Ashley Budde, Danielle Budde, Ashley Ferguson, Elyse Amadeo, Erin Schlegel, Jessica Moore and Tula Urban.
Several other riders from the region also competed at the event, including Pacheco Pass 4-H’s Kacie Miller, Adams 4-H’s Koryn Spier, Marianna Olson, and Brianna Groves, and Calaveras Hills 4-H’s Sheena Reardon.
Leading the way was Jones, the Live Oak High cross-country and track standout who is also a top-notch equestrian.
Jones won the high point title in Gymkhana in the senior division (14-19), riding her gymkhana horse “Back in a Flash.” Competing in the six gymkhana events, including Cloverleaf Barrels, Speed Barrels, Single Stake, Bi-rangle, Quad-rangle, and Pole Bending, Jones emerged as the top rider in her age group. She earned Champion in Bi-rangle and Quad-rangle, Reserve Champion in Pole Bending and Speed Barrels and third in Single Stake.
Jones also won the high point title in Western (senior division), and was Champion in Western Equitation, Western Pleasure and Horsemanship, and third overall in Showmanship. She also earned the reserve high point title in English flat classes (non-jumping).
Other local winners included:
n Budde, who was champion in Western Equitation in the junior division (9-13). Her little sister Danielle also took a third in English Pleasure in the beginner rider division.
n Ferguson, who showed in the Green Horse division (horses in their first year of showing) and won champion in Western Trail, reserve champion in Western Pleasure and third in Hunter Hack.
n Amadeo, who also showed in the Green Horse division, and won champion in Western Pleasure and reserve champion in Western Equitation.
n Schlegel, who won reserve champion in Western Showmanship, reserve champion in Horsemanship and third in Western Trail. She was also the reserve Western high point winner.
n Moore, who was champion in Gymkhana in Pole Bending.
n And, Jones’ little sister Urban, who showed in the beginner rider division and placed in English Showmanship, English Equitation, Western Equitation and Western Trail.
Regional winners included:
n Miller, who won the high point title in Long/Short Stirrup in English Jumping. She was also champion in Hunter Hack and Equitation over Fences, and third in Working Hunters.
n Spier, who was champion in Western Showmanship in the senior division.
n Olson, who took third in English Pleasure in the senior division.
n Groves, who showed in gymkhana in the junior division, and placed in several gymkhana classes.
n And, Reardon, who placed in several Gymkhana classes in the senior division.
