Dear Editor,
Another Opinion page article has appeared in the Morgan Hill Times that portrays Sobrato High School in a negative light, which certainly is unfortunate since this is a high school that the town has needed and that the voters approved the bond measure to build it.
I find it sad that the existing high school (Live Oak) fails to recognize that this is a new high school with a new athletic program still in the making.
Hats off to Principal Rich Knapp and Coach Jeff Patterson for putting the safety and well-being of its students before sports and not participating in a league that the school is clearly not ready for.
How can you evenly match a varsity football team with only sophomores and juniors against a rival team, such as Live Oak, whose team consists of experienced seniors and juniors? Simply, you can’t.
The injuries that could occur, well, I didn’t think any parent would subject their son to that sort of pain and humiliation.
What Live Oak head football Coach Glen Webb also fails to recognize is that Sobrato does not have the medical personnel or trainers that Live Oak does. Sobrato’s football team medical personnel last year consisted of one person, me, a registered nurse-emergency department, trauma-certified, volunteer to help the team. The school does not have the medical/trainer resources that Live Oak has and has benefited from. Sobrato will have the same resources as the school develops, but until then, it’s just me, with the coaches on the sidelines making sure the players are safe and injury free.
Coach Webb could learn a thing or two from Coach Patterson, and that is, the safety and well-being of his athletes comes first, not what league will give the school more notability.
