Beginning July 1 this year, more than 1.2 million Rotarians in more than 31,600 Rotary clubs around the world will begin celebrating Rotary International’s 100th birthday. To celebrate, Morgan Hill Rotarians will undertake a special project that would be enjoyed by all Morgan Hill.

The club will be providing and installing picnic tables and benches at Paradise Park. The concrete pads for the picnic tables will have space for people to set their barbecue grills. Funding comes from the Morgan Hill Rotary Club’s Community Projects budget.

John Tarvin will be president of the Morgan Hill Rotary Club during Rotary’s Centennial.

“Our club wanted to select a special community service project for Morgan Hill to help commemorate Rotary’s 100 years of service,” Tarvin said. “Working with Julie Spier (also a Rotarian) at the Parks and Recreation Department, Del Foster, our club’s community service director next year, has identified a project that will be accessible and available to everyone in Morgan Hill.

There are currently no picnic facilities at this park, though there is a play structure. Mori Struve, project engineer with the City of Morgan Hill, has a project underway to replace and improve the play structure at Paradise Park. “Rotary’s participation enhances what the city is going to do at Paradise Park,” Struve said.

Foster totaled up past Rotary community projects.

“Like the scoring stands at the Community Park ball fields, the expansion of the El Toro Youth Center and the work we’ve done on the grounds at Villa Mira Monte (the old Morgan Hill House), this is an excellent, hands-on Rotary project,” Foster said.

While there is not yet a firm schedule, the work will be completed in the early fall. For more information about the Morgan Hill Rotary Club, contact president Steve Tate at 621-7377 or incoming president John Tarvin at 778-3635.
