Dear Editor,
Live, love and laugh … that is what Susan Schilling Robinson epitomized in her short time on earth. She did more living in her 39 years than most people could ever hope to do in 80. Her memorial service, which she wrote herself, was one of the most beautiful and enlightening experiences I have ever witnessed. What a privilege to have known such a talented, energetic, and caring person. The reading of a tender letter from her father, the telling of her best friend’s fond memories, and a brother’s touching tribute all brought tears to our eyes, but they also opened our eyes to what life and relationships should be all about.
I felt through the entire service that she was letting us know what it is to live and love as fully as possible, so that we might honor her memory by being a better person. A world-class triathlete who loved nothing better than to go running outdoors, she asked us to think of her whenever we feel the sun or wind on our faces. What a wonderful way to be remembered.
The large wreath of signed running shoes with the ribbon that read, “It’s not the finish but the journey” was the perfect tribute to a life well run, in every sense of the word. We can all learn from Sue’s dedication and devotion to family, friends and goals. Her lifelong accomplishments and yearlong valiant and selfless fight to live will set a standard for all who knew her. Sue’s zest for life and courage in the face of death will never be forgotten. She was always thanking people for what they had done for her, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank her for making one of her last acts on earth – the planning of her memorial service – a way to reach out and leave us with an indelible reminder to live, love and laugh with every ounce of our beings.
