Red Phone: All dogs must be confined or on a leash

Red Phone, I’m calling to complain and ask a question. I live
behind a bar at 5th Street and Monterey Road, and the customers are
so loud from noon to midnight, then when they walk to their cars
they are often yelling. Can I call the police?
“Red Phone, I’m calling to complain and ask a question. I live behind a bar at 5th Street and Monterey Road, and the customers are so loud from noon to midnight, then when they walk to their cars they are often yelling. Can I call the police?”

Red Phone: Dear Loud and Yelling, sure you can call the police. Perhaps officers can speak with the owners who can talk to customers about being polite when leaving. And, if anyone is leaving and is inebriated, they could be cited for drunk in public or if they get behind the wheel, they could be arrested for driving under the influence.

However, being the good neighbor Red Phone believes you are, why don’t you walk over and speak to the owner about the disturbances. Then, if and when you do call police, you can at least tell them you tried talking to the owner. Just a thought.

Signs are a big waste of money

“Dear Red Phone, speaking of the $170,000 directional signs … what will happen when businesses (like the auto dealer) close? Will someone (for a hefty fee, of course) put a big ‘X’ through the name? I think the signs were a big waste of $$$.”

Red Phone: Dear A Big Waste, this topic has been beaten more than the drums at The Drum Hut. From comments to our Web site to Red Phone questions to letters to the editor, it appears reactions are mixed to the new directional signs that were installed to direct visitors and those new to the city to various locations throughout town.

Sure, some businesses may close, but others will open and it’s very likely new signs will be needed in the next decade or so. There were directional signs installed in the 1990s that were eventually removed because several city departments, the police department for one, moved.

And in the grand scheme of things spending $170,000 in Redevelopment Agency money, that cannot be used to pay for city staff or police salaries, or any other general fund expense, is a perfectly acceptable use of the funds.

The city gets about $20 million a year to spend on projects that help spur economic development, and the signs meet that criteria.

Anyway, that’s just Red Phone’s opinion. Hope that answers your questions, good caller.
