The need for speed and reasons to slow down
Red Phone was on easy street this week as two callers sent their opinion to the Crimson Crusader on the chronic problems of speeding throughout Morgan Hill.
“Hi Red Phone, I suppose I have a death wish because I almost got creamed on Monterey Road while trying to cross. I take classes at Gavilan College and I like to walk across the street to Jumpin’ Juice and Java to get coffee. On the first day of classes on Aug. 22, a woman driving a Hummer did not stop and yelled at me to get out of the road. She was going approximately 40 mph in a 25 mph zone. Today, a woman driving a Toyota Camry gave me the finger when I tried to cross and I put my hand out for her to not only slow down (she had to be doing 50) but also to yield to me; the pedestrian. Um, what?
“I appreciate the speed bump a couple of blocks away, but something needs to be done to educate these drivers about yielding to pedestrians crossing Monterey. Over a decade ago, I lived in Northampton, Mass. and there were signs posted everywhere that pedestrians have the right of way. I know the police are busy but something has to be done to punish those drivers that not only break the law by speeding but could also potentially hurt or kill someone. So….either read this letter or read my obituary because it is only a matter of time before I am human road kill.”
Another reader called Red Phone to say:
“I’d like to have a rebuttal to your weekend edition of Aug. 27-29 regarding the speed limit at Sobrato on Burnett. First of all, there is a 30mph speed limit about 30 yards east of Monterey. There is no indication that a school even exists on Burnett and I just think that maybe something should be done about that.
“According to your information, Steve Creer of Morgan Hill Public Works didn’t even know if there was a speed limit sign there. He said they’re going to do a speed limit check, which they have not done, and he said there are school zone signs in the area, but there are not.
“When you turn onto Burnett going east there is no indication that there is even a school there. The speed limit of 30mph is actually too close for people going south because people are too concerned about getting into their lane – which is two lanes going south turning left onto Burnett. This is a rebuttal indicating that there are schools up there, but there is not – there no indication that a school there even exists. Also, I live in the mobile home park on Burnett and I think it should be a 25mph speed limit.”
The Red Phone stands corrected and has forwarded your message to Mr. Creer.
What’s with the Web site?
“I’m trying to access the Morgan Hill Times online and I have not been able to pull up articles in the archives and I am a subscriber. Just wondering if that is a system issue or what’s going on.”
To the best of Red Phone and the Times’ knowledge, Web site is working fine. Some of our readers, however, have had problems accessing the Web site and we’re prepared to give them a hand.
