KNOW thine PARISHES

I’d like to apply for the job of copy editor of, at least, the front page. You identified the parish in Morgan Hill as St. Mary right there on the front page with the pictures of the “Oklahoma!” cast. Come on. Everyone knows St. Catherine Church is in Morgan Hill and St. Mary is in Gilroy. Give me a call if you need someone to read your copy before you print it. I’d be glad to help.

And …

I was rather surprised to see you listed St. Catherine’s children’s play “Oklahoma” as being St. Mary’s parish in Morgan Hill. I’m stunned that you didn’t know which parish is in Morgan Hill. It’s St. Catherine.

RED PHONE

The Red Phone admits we had a little trouble with our saints last week, but it’s not because we are geographically challenged. It was an error on our part, and we apologize to all the good parishioners in Morgan Hill and Gilroy. We also ran a correction in our Tuesday paper, and as some of you may have noticed, we made another mistake, attributing the production to St. Catherine Parish instead of St. Catherine Catholic School. You can imagine the Red Phone’s dismay at this further revelation. It seems your Ruby Reformer is being tested by a higher power. All your humble servant can do is apologize and pray you find it in your hearts to forgive.

Times reporter Marilyn Dubil, a parishioner at St. Catherine Parish, has assured us that she had nothing to do with the mistake and would like her job back as a catechism teacher.

To Stop or not to Stop

I have called about the stoplight at westbound Cochrane Road going on the ramp to northbound Highway 101. The Red Phone stated the city had no plans to change that light and that’s fine. I appreciate the response. But I still have the question as to what we are supposed to do at that light – completely stop and wait for green, treat it as a right on red, or enter the ramp and treat it separate from the intersection. It seems rather odd to drive through the red light, but if you stop, people come up to you and honk.

RED PHONE

The light at the intersection functions as a regular red light. The problem is many people apparently don’t seem to feel the light is meant for them because they think there is no way someone could run into them. The Red Phone observed several people not stopping fully, which is technically a ticketable offense.

It is unlike the light at the off-ramp to northbound Highway 101 at East Dunne Avenue. At this intersection, Caltrans installed a do-not-turn-on-red light.

On Cochrane Road you should stop at the light then proceed with caution if the coast is clear. To avoid angering the people behind you, you don’t need to wait for the light to turn as long as there are no cars coming.

“The ramp is kind of out in the intersection and the corner is another 50 feet in front of you,” said Morgan Hill senior civil engineer Scott Creer. “Some people are a little hesitant to go out there.”

Although the city has no plans to make any changes to this intersection , Creer recommends filing a complaint with Caltrans to see if it will consider improving the intersection. The address for the form is www.dot.ca.gov/maintform.html.
