Santa-visited households, and residents celebrating other winter holidays as well will have no excuse for avoiding recycling this December because of a new city program.

Anthony Eulo, the city’s environmental director has put together a free “Recycling Package” to help residents sort through and properly dispose of – or save – wrapping paper, ribbons, greeting cards and packing boxes.

The kit contains a large brown paper bag to collect recyclable paper from gifts – no foil or other metallic designs, a large plastic bag to collect packing foam – peanuts, styrofoam, all recyclable, a small bag to collect reusable items such as ribbons, bows and nonperishable decorations.

The kit also includes instructions, an envelope for collecting greeting cards – no metallic ink – with suggestions for reuse projects or where to donate. Corrugated cardboard – with the curvy innards, not the plain, stiff tagboard – should be broken down, bundled and put out on recycling days as usual. The kit also encourages taking old, but good, toys and clothes to local thrift stores and includes a list of addresses.

Eulo, wearing a Santa hat, introduced the recycling kit to the City Council Wednesday night. The kits are available, without charge, at BookSmart, 17415 Monterey Road at West Second Street, and at City Hall, 17555 Peak Ave.
