I attended the reent City Council meeting during which the new library location was discussed. I am very frustrated because, though the polls show that two-third of the people who responded, want the library to remain in its present location, it appears that the council and mayor have all decided to put it downtown.

They also seem to have decided that the owner of the land Third and Depot streets is also the one to build the library and the one to hold ownership of the property for the next 20 years, after which Morgan Hill will either have to pay the going rate for that property or chance losing the library for lack of resources with which to pay the balloon payment.

As part of that deal, the land owner wants to build 40 condominiums on Fourth Street. To put that much on one city block seems unbelievably crowded and congested. There are many other small towns with excellent librarys that are heavily used, but they are not immediately in the middle of the town. Examples are Los Altos, Sunnyvale, Saratoga and Cupertino.

The present location offers good parking, no congestion and quiet. The library should be located where it can best be used as a library, not as an added attraction to the downtown area. The people with whom I have spoken all feel that going to the library is normally a destination by itself and is not normally connected with a shopping or dining trip.

If the council members and the mayor cannot or will not respond to the wishes of the citizens who elected them, then perhaps they should not hold office. Perhaps a recall is in order.

Nancie Barker,

Morgan Hill
