Morgan Hill – The Live Oak girls soccer team will be in a rebuilding year, said coach Tony Vasquez.

He said with a relatively young team that includes a freshman goalie and diving into the Blossom Valley Athletic League for the first time, the season will be a learning experience for the team.

“If we can go .500, my goal is to go to (the Central Coast Section playoffs) and finish in the middle of the pack,” Vasquez said. “That would be very good for us.”

Vasquez went on to say that since the Acorns are competing against teams in the top tier Mount Hamilton Division, he thinks that his team will need a little time to adjust to the new competition.

“We are a very young team,” Vasquez said. “Since we are in the highest level of the BVAL, it will be a rebuilding year for this team, I think.”

Live Oak is starting freshman Gladis Corvarrueias as goal keeper.

Vasquez said though she is young, she is doing a good job for the team.

The Acorns opened their season Saturday against host Burlingame in the Burlingame Tournament, losing 1-0.

Vasquez said his team has not had the time necessary to prepare because of the field hockey team making it to the second round of the CCS playoffs.

“I think with less than a week of practice, things went well,” Vasquez said.

Vasquez credited his defense with keeping the Acorns in the game until the end.

“I thought Burlingame played better than us in the first half,” Vasquez said. “But in the second, I thought we played about even.”

The Acorns are coming off a 4-6-7 overall record and 3-4-5 in Tri-County Athletic League play.

Although Vasquez said the team is young, 10 players, six of whom started, are returning from last year.

Included in the list of those returning are captains Ashley Thomas, Sarah Locarnini and Alayna Bongiorno.

The Acorns played its second game Monday night against Sacred Heart Prep in the Burlingame Tournament. Results were unavailable by presstime.
