GILROY — Coach John Lango’s Gavilan Rams travel to San Pablo Saturday for a 1 p.m. date with the Contra Costa Comets, searching for momentum as the Coast Conference five-game campaign looms in two weeks.
“We’ve had a good week of practice,” said Lango of the 0-3 Rams. “We’re a little banged up and the flu’s been going around, but we should be OK by Saturday.”
While the Rams have mustered just 30 points in three games, Contra Costa posted 41 points in last weekend’s loss to De Anza.
“Contra Costa had some big plays, including a kick-off return and a fumble recovery for touchdowns,” said Lango. “They can beat explosive because they are big up front and their quarterback scrambles a lot. We’re not an explosive team, but I think we can run on them.”
Gavilan has won only twice in seven games with the Comets, although the Rams easily handled Contra Costa 21-0 last season.
The Comets are 0-4 in pre-Bay Valley Conference action, including losses to Coast Conference members Hartnell (34-16) and De Anza (68-41).
Quarterback Don Miguel Tutass has thrown for 839 yards on a 68-of-122 campaign along with five touchdowns for Coach Dave Johnson’s Comets. Michael Hicks is the top receiver, 18 catches for 224 yards and two touchdowns. The struggling ground game is led by Erick McDaniel, 34 rushes for 79 yards and one score.
The Rams have produced 933 yards in three losses. Andrew Gayles (128 yards) and Sean Hale (122 and one touchdown) have become the primary runners for Gavilan. Sophomore quarterback Mike Incardona has covered 620 yards in a 51-of-99 showing along with three touchdowns. Sophomore sideouts Timothy Harvey (17 grabs, 284 yards) and Victor Sapp (10 for 118) make the Rams a veteran passing unit.
