The Pride of Morgan Hill 14U team played strong in the Vallejo tournament to take third place in the team’s first “B” tournament of their summer season.

On this first day of tournament play, the Pride played three games on the day. In the first game, the Pride defeated the Ceres Sizzle 6-1. Colleen Henningsen went 2-for-3, scoring twice for the team as the Pride’s consistent lead off hitter. Amber Isabel had a pair of key RBI singles.

Both Gennifer Giunsiana and Mattie Borges went 2-for-3. Lindsey Capozza was strong on the pitcher’s mound, giving up only two hits to the Sizzle. Catcher Heather Hays, with a quick throw, caught a Sizzle runner leading off first base.

The second game was against the Vallejo Hurricanes “B” team. Pride scored 10 runs in the first inning on seven hits and four walks. Jackie Palacios pitched a superb game, with three strikeouts in three inning without giving up a hit. The game was called after three innings due to the “mercy rule.”

The third and final game on Saturday was against the Vallejo Hurricanes “A” team. Although Pride outhit the Hurricanes 7-5, it came up short in the end with a 3-2 loss. Capozza started the Pride off in this two-run game against the Hurricanes by scoring in the first inning. Lindsey got a single, stole second and third. Hays came to the plate to hit a single to drive in Lindsey for the first run of the game. Amber Isabel stole home for the second run of the game.

The Pride held the lead until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Hurricanes came up with a single run on three hits. The Hurricanes scored their final two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead. Even though Pride came up short in the end, they placed excellent defense with only one error. Allyson Yamashita was solid at shortstop with four putouts.

During champion play on Sunday, the Pride played two games. The first was a rematch against the Vallejo Hurricanes “B” team. This second meeting ended in an 11-6 victory for the Pride. Lindsey Capozza and Jackie Palacios combined to pitch a five-hitter with six strikeouts. Brittany Ondich had a big game at the plate, hitting a single, triple and scoring three runs for the Pride. Amber Isabel also went 3-for-3 with a single and two doubles. Jessica Ikerd added to the scoring total with a triple in the second inning.

The final game of the tournament was in the game against the always powerful Pleasanton Phantom. Though the Pride played a strong defensive game with only one error, the bats were quiet until the six inning when the Pride had three singles in a row by Capozza, Brittany Ondich and Hays but failed to score. The Pride came up short in this semifinal game but took home a third place trophy.
