Live Oak High
MORGAN HILL — Michael Schreiber’s career night helped deliver the first victory of the season for Live Oak boys basketball.
Schreiber scored a game-high 22 points, including three 3-pointers, Friday as the Acorns outlasted visiting Santa Clara, 70-61.
“He caught fire,” Live Oak coach Brett Paolucci said. “He was really hitting his shot. (Schreiber) also came up with some big assists late in the game.”
Dominic Leach added a dozen points and eight rebounds, and Cody Gallizioli and Nathan Seifert netted 11 points apiece for the Acorns (1-2 overall), who shook off a 78-49 beating against Mount Hamilton Division member Leigh last Monday. Seifert scored 11 in that game as well to lead the Acorns.
Friday’s win marked the first for Paolucci in his second coaching stop at Live Oak. His team trailed 38-34 at halftime before pouring in 20 points in the third quarter.
“It was great to see them finish a game,” Paolucci said. “There was a point when I asked them how badly they wanted it. I told them they needed to play great defense down the stretch and they did that.”
Brandon Loredo finished with 16 points to lead the Bruins (2-5) of the El Camino Division.
Bulldogs dealt first losses
Fresh off of a 2-0 start, the Bulldogs hit a snag last weekend at the Amador Classic in Pleasanton, losing 61-51 Friday to Amador Valley and 66-46 to Las Lomas on Saturday.
The tournament-host Dons (3-3), an East Bay Athletic League member, held Sobrato’s offense in check until the fourth quarter, when the teams combined for 45 points.
Scott Taylor led the Bulldogs with 16 points, and Howard Kwong added eight points and seven rebounds. Teammate Charley Bynum finished with six points, four steals, four rebounds and three assists.
Sobrato was overwhelmed by Las Lomas (3-3) of the Diablo Foothill Athletic League but received another big effort from Taylor.
The junior guard scored 16 points again and dished three assists.
