Acorns, Mustangs to play rematch Friday; LO tennis drops two
close matches to Willow Glen
SAN JOSE — Held to one run and three hits for the second straight outing, Live Oak fell 8-1 Wednesday at Pioneer in Mount Hamilton Division baseball.

It was consecutive loss No. 4 for the Acorns (4-6 overall, 2-5 league), who committed six errors. They can take a step back in the right direction before a home crowd Friday when the Mustangs (3-7, 3-4) visit Sarich Field for a 3:30 p.m. rematch.

Pioneer jumped ahead early, scoring four runs in the first inning after Ken Hall supplied an RBI single in the top half. The Mustangs went ahead 5-1 in the third inning, then put three runs across in the fourth.

Cody Van Aken, who took the loss despite striking out seven, helped his cause with a 2-for-2 day at the plate. The first-year Acorn is batting .394.

Rams take from LO

Live Oak put up a pair of good fights only to lose Thursday and Tuesday to Willow Glen in West Valley Division play.

Thursday’s meeting at Willow Glen High School was a heart-breaker for the Acorns, whose hopes once again fell on freshman Bryan Freitas in the No. 4 singles match. Age and experience proved the difference as Willow Glen junior Emmett Harper won 7-5, 1-6, 6-4.

Playing smart tennis, Acorns No. 3 single Dylan Johnson delivered a win in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, over Simon Herrera. Live Oak also received gritty victories from the team’s Nos. 1-3 doubles tandems. Q. Farrooqui and Bryant Gamboa triumphed 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-4 against Calvin Fong and Chad Wichershan; and Spencer McClellan and Clay Carlson put away Cameron Fernandes and Austen Marr, 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-3.

The Rams followed with a 5-2 victory Tuesday at Live Oak High School.

Branham too much for Bulldogs

The young Sobrato team — complete with five starting freshmen — is continuing to improve each week, though the Bulldogs are off to a 1-4 start in Santa Teresa Division play.

Tuesday, they ran into first place Branham, which remained undefeated in league with a 7-0 victory at Sobrato High School.
