In early playoff action in the Bronco division of the Pony baseball league the No. 7 seed Giants upset the No. 2 seed Yankees 10-7 in a fifth inning rally.
The Yankees jumped out to 5-0 lead by the end of the second inning thanks to the long bats and swift base running by Nathaniel Batad and Jason Struzik.
After being walked in the first inning Batad stole second and third base, and then scored the first run of the game on a single by Struzik.
Struzik then steals second and third base, and is driven home on a sacrifice groundout.
Building on their early lead the Yankees capitalized on a walk and a balk scoring two more runs on a double by Batad.
Batad would steal third and score on a passed ball to bring the Yankees lead to five.
In the third the Giants Cleve Gurney singled and stole second base, and was driven home on a home run by Michael LemMon.
The Yankees post another run in the third inning as Tyler Pederson is driven home on a groundout, but the Giants would score two more in the top of the fourth closing the Yankees’ lead to two.
Capped on a double by Jarrod Cerniglia the Giants rallied in the top of the fifth inning on a barrage of walks and singles taking the lead to 10-6.
The Yankees would post one more run in the bottom of the seventh when Struzik doubled to drive home Matt Bellah, who reached base on an error, but it would not be enough to catch the Giants.
Yankees, 8, Indians 7
In the Bronco constellation bracket playoff game for both teams the No. 2 seed Yankees narrowly defeated the No. 8 seed Indians 8-7.
In the top of the first the Indians’ Brandon Cressi is walked, advances on a ground out, and scores on Adam Belluomini’s single.
John Forestieri then singles and gets to third base on an overthrow and then scores on ground out.
The Yankees answer back posting three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Jason Struzik singles, steals second, and scores on Jesse Lares’ single.
Auston Rutledge then hits a two-run home run, scoring Lares.
Christian Davies-White would single after Tyler Pederson is walked, but both are left stranded keeping the score tied at 3-3 until the third.
The Indians’ Kody Root steals second and third base after reaching first base on an error, and tags up to take home on a sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the third, the Yankees’ score two runs rallying around a double by Christian Davies-White, taking the lead 5-4.
The Yankees keep the rally alive in the fourth thanks to the speedy base running of Taylor Pullen and a two-run home run from Lares bringing the score to 8-4.
The Indians gain momentum in the fifth, as Root triples and is driven home on a Belluomini single, and would then score a run per inning in both the sixth and seventh innings closing the Yankees lead to 8-7.
With the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning the Indians struggled to drive in another run, stranding the tying run on third, and the Yankees would hold on for the win.
A’s 7, Marlins 5
In Wednesday’s match up, the Bronco division A’s rallied four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to beat the Marlins 7-5.
In the first inning the Marlins scored one run on single by Jim Hagan, who took second and third base on errors, and then home plate on a passed ball.
The A’s would tie the score 1-1 on a single by Andrew Bueno who took second and third on errors and scored on a sacrifice fly.
The game would remain tied until the top of the third when the Marlins broke it open with four runs on successive walks to Jim Hagan and Conor Havstad, RBI singles by Trenton Cisewski and Isaac Allen, and a two-RBI triple by Ryan Corvese to take a 5-1 lead.
The Athletics almost start a rally in the bottom of the third on a deep hit into right field, but a great relay from right fielder Ryan Perez to center fielder Brenden Stocksick to shortstop Conor Havstad to catcher Jim Hagan nipped the runner at the plate. A strikeout thrown by Marlins pitcher Nick Swanson and a fly ball to Cisewski ended the inning.
After a leadoff single in the fourth inning Dawes would take third base on an error, and score on a single by Westyn Herscovitch.
Herscovitch then advanced on a sacrifice by Lorenzo Aguayo and scored on a hit by Mike Jarvis, closing the Marlins lead to 5-3.
The A’s rallied for the lead in the fifth inning with four runs on leadoff double by Miguel Carlos, singles by Zack McKerrow, Bueno, and Dawes, and a bunt by Herscovitch.
The game would remain scoreless through the seventh inning, and the A’s would persevere to win 7-5.
Marlins 10, Indians 5
The Indians scored first when John Forestieri got a hit and scored in the bottom of the second inning.
The Marlins answered with a run in the top of the fourth when Isaac Allen reached on a single, and Trenton Cisewski drove him in with a hit to left.
The Indians regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth when John Forestieri walked and stole around the bases to score.
The Marlins broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning. Garrett Taylor walked and stole a pair of bases, and Alex Schnorr drove him in with a single.
Nick Swanson reached on a dropped third strike. Jim Hagan drove in Schnorr with a double and Swanson also scored. Isaac Allen followed with a single and came around to score.
The Indians got a run of their own to make it 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth. Brent Bottomley singled and scored.
The Marlins picked up an insurance run in the sixth when Brenden Stocksick singled to center, and Taylor drove him in with a sacrifice to second base.
The Indians got another run in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 7-4. Adam Belluomini hit a double to left field, John Forestieri advanced him with a single, and Pete Athans drove him in with a single to right. The Marlins Stocksick Marlins saved a run with a diving catch on a ball hit to center, and Jim Hagan struck out two batters to end the threat.
In the top of the seventh, Hagan hit a triple to right field and scored on a passed ball to make the score 8-4 Marlins.
Hagan struck out three batters to seal the win for the Marlins.
