With the Independence Day holiday approaching, the Morgan Hill Police Department has begun to remind residents that fireworks are illegal in the city limits, and warn that officers will be out enforcing local restrictions.
Even the “safe and sane” variety of fireworks that are seasonally permitted in nearby communities are illegal in Morgan Hill, police said.
MHPD said they will practice “zero tolerance” for the use of illegal fireworks, and noted that fines for violations can result in up to $5,000 for repeat offenders.
Fines are tripled during the holiday season, which runs from July 1-7 for Independence Day, police added.
Specifically, administrative fines for the use of illegal fireworks during this period are $300 for the first offense; $600 for the second violation; and $1,500 for a third violation. Possession of fireworks is a misdemeanor, punishable by up to a $5,000 fine and one year in the county jail.
“Every year, fireworks lead to brush fires, house fires, injured people, terrified pets and missing animals,” says a press release from MPHD. “Our surrounding hills remain dry and dangerously flammable, and fireworks—no matter the type—pose a serious threat to our community’s safety.
“On top of the fire risk, the loud blasts can severely impact veterans, trauma survivors and those with sensory sensitivities.”
