A small plane was forced to crash land on the shoulder of the San Martin Avenue on-ramp to U.S. 101 after suffering engine failure about 5 p.m. June 24, according to a Department of California Highway Patrol collision report.
The single-engine Cessna was piloted by 30-year-old San Jose resident Dhar Mrityunjoy, who sustained lacerations to his face as a result of the crash.
Mrityunjoy was flying southbound just north of San Martin Ave. attempting to land when the plane “suddenly lost all engine power forcing him to land,” according to the CHP report. The plane collided into a traffic metering light and a metal guardrail where it came to rest.
Mrityunjoy was treated and released at the scene by emergency personnel for lacerations to his face, according to CHP.
Traffic was shut down on the ramp for about four hours until personnel cleared the scene.
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating this incident to determine the cause of the collision.
