JUNIOR PEE WEES

Morgan Hill – The Morgan Hill Raiders Junior Pee Wees began their prep for the playoffs with a game against the Almaden Valley Mustangs.

After a scoreless first quarter, thanks to Josh Araiza and Tyler Molina bringing down the Mustangs ball carrier at the 20-yard line and saving the touchdown, the mojo the Raiders had from Vernon Davis’ visit on Tuesday ran out. Two plays into the second quarter, the Mustangs scored to take a 6-0 lead.

On the ensuing kick off, Alex Della Maggiore returned it deep into Mustang territory, with a 35-yard scamper, getting a key block from Mitch Crowley.

The drive ended when Trevor Bearden went nine yards around the left end, following key blocks from Nick Havstad and Matthew Jarvis to find his way into the end zone.

On the last play of the half, Trevor Bearden broke around the left end again, following Willie Long, Jesse Sanchez and Jason Struzik into the end zone from 37 yards out as time expired. Bearden then converted his first kicked extra point of the season, making it 14-6 at the half with the Raiders owning the momentum.

This was short lived as Almaden took the kick off to start the second half, drove 62 yards and scored, making it 14-13.

Morgan Hill took the ensuing kick off and started to drive, when a fumble ended the threat. Almaden then took nearly seven minutes off the clock by going 42 yards to score and take a 19-14 lead.

The Raiders never got on track offensively the rest of the way. Both of their remaining drives came up short, without them able to convert a first down.

In spite of solid defensive play from Jarrod Cerniglia, Josh Araiza and Manny Luna, the Raiders could not get their hands on the ball enough in the second half and time of possession ruled the day, a battle the Mustangs won nearly two to one.

The Raiders begin their playoff march on Saturday at 8am at Britton Field, with an opponent to be named.
