The Orchard Valley Youth Soccer League’s Scream U16 Class I girls team recently won the Wine Country Classic tournament title.
The Scream was led by Alli Cheadle (Valley Christian High standout) and Corinne Kirmil (the team’s newest speedster) in the tourney.
In the final match the Scream found themselves facing an undefeated team in the Marin FC.
In a physical contest, against a strong competitor, the Scream defense continued to destroy the offensive drives mounted by the Marin squad.
In the first half of play, the Scream was awarded a penalty and Rachel Schweiger put it away for a 1-0 lead.
The Scream girls won four games in two days, against solid competitors; out scoring their opponents 10 to 3, with two shutouts in the semifinal and final.
Meanwhile, the OVYSL Stingrays U15 boys Class I team opened Abronzino League play at the MH Soccer Complex last weekend with two games, a loss to the 2001 State Champions SCC Inter, and a win against the Almaden Lightning.
The Stingrays now face the current two-time State Champions – the Mount Hamilton Lobitos in San Jose on Saturday.
Against the SCC Inter, the Stongrays lost 5-1, despite previously holding an undefeated record this year on the MH soccer complex turf. The Stingrays were only outshot 14-13 by the Inter, and had many scoring opportunities go awry.
Stingray Ricardo Plata’s corner kick found Casey Mott in the box and Mott blasted the shot past the goalie for the home team’s lone goal.
The Stingrays gained a measure of revenge from a loss to the Lightning over Labor Day weekend, by the same 1-0 score. Early in the second half, the ‘Rays had a corner kick, and Ricardo Plata’s pass just tipped over the goalie’s hands, finding Kevin Grove in the box for a goal.
In addition, the OVYSL Sting U12 Class I girls team tied the Sunnyvale Roadrunners 0-0 last weekend at MH Soccer Complex in the league opener. The first half featured excellent fullback play by Kayla Cisneroz, Rahni Giardina and several boots to mid-field by Caitlyn Azevedo.
Sting goalie Katelynn Hughes easily handled the one Roadrunner shot on goal.
Midfield play was dominated by Kendra Muro, Nicole Locicero, Amanda Morgan and Nicole Gonzales.
The Sting’s best scoring try came as result of a penalty. On the play, Fabiola Diaz dribbled down the left side, bypassed a defender and was tripped for the penalty. Diaz made a strong penalty kick toward the right upper corner of the goal.
But the Roadrunner goalie made a great effort, leaping off the ground to tip the potential score over the upper bar.
