the state, the Orchard Valley Youth Soccer League U15 Stingrays
boys emerged with a title at the third annual Morgan Hill/Gilroy
Cup last weekend.
Competing against 86 of the best Division I competitive teams in the state, the Orchard Valley Youth Soccer League U15 Stingrays boys emerged with a title at the third annual Morgan Hill/Gilroy Cup last weekend.
The Stingrays beat a highly regarded team from Los Angeles in the semifinals before downing the Hayward Lobos for the Cup championship in their age group.
Held at the Morgan Hill Soccer Complex, the annual event is one of the biggest tournaments in the state.
More than 6,000 people, competed in the event, which signals the start of the 2004/05 tournament season.
Other age group Cup champions included:
Girls U11, the River City Boca Juniors
Girls U12, the Mountain View-Los Altos Avalanche
Girls U13, the Danville Mustang Spirit
Girls U15, the MV-LA Galaxy
Girls U16, the MV-LA Menace
Boys U11, the Santa Clara Sporting 93B
Boys U12, the San Diego RB Renegades
Boys U13, the La Morinda FC 91
Boys U14, the Danville Strikers (the OVYSL Pumas took second, losing the final on penalty kicks after two overtimes)
Boys U16, the Santa Cruz Breakers
Boys U19, the Santa Clara Sporting
In all, the OVYSL had 11 teams competing in the tournament.
For the Girls U11 Toros and Boys U11 Lightning, it was their first experience playing with 11 a side and in tourney competition.
The Toros placed fifth and the Lightning took second place
The Girls U12 Sting took sixth place and the Girls U16 Scream took third.
The Boys U12 Blast finished sixth and the Boys U19 Barcelona, facing some of the strongest teams in that age group, finished fifth.
The Boys U13 Eagles ended up in fourth place.
