The Orchard Valley under 13 class 3 girls Fury took over sole possession of first place with two well- played games on Saturday, Oct. 15 and Sunday, Oct. 16. The two victories vaulted the Fury to a league leading and undefeated 6-0 record.

Strong Saturday afternoon winds at the Morgan Hill soccer complex made playing conditions challenging. The Fury took the lead in the first three minutes when Nicole Gonzales booted the ball for a 1-0 lead and the team never looked back. Cassandra Valenzuela, near the goal box, expertly dropped a pass back to Kelly Foster. Foster blasted an arching shot from the quarter field mark over the Firebird goalie to mid-net for a 2-0 Fury lead.

The Firebirds closed the gap in the second half with a goal at the 15-minute mark. The strong southerly winds made defending the south goal a challenge.

Mid-fielders Anna Molyneux and Jennifer Protsman turned back several Firebird offensive drives. Backline defenders Emily Mandel and Mika Matsumoto were also up to the task allowing no further Firebird scores cementing the 2-1 Fury victory.

On Sunday, the Fury traveled to Silver Creek Valley to take on the MHYSL Velocity. The Velocity scored at the five-minute mark for a quick 1-0 lead. The Velocity were held scoreless the remainder of the game as Fury defenders Mariette Lowe and Lauren Drewniany crossed up the Velocity offensive attack. With five minutes left in the first half, Lauren Bertero set up Alex Maldonado for a Fury score and 1-1 tie.

The Fury’s excellent conditioning and depth has allowed the team to excel in the second half of their games this season. Sunday was no exception. Mid-fielders Lauren Hunsaker and Aubrey Young turned back several Velocity attacks.

The Fury took a lead 2-1 when Alyssa Gummow fed Cassandra Valenzuela who left-footed the ball toward the left corner of the goal. A few minutes later, Lauren Bertero broke away from the pack, got behind the Velocity goalie, angling a pass to an open Nicole Gonzales. From the left side, Gonzales fired the ball just inside the left post for a 3-1 lead.

Special mention to Fury goalie Allison Troini for excellent goal keeping all weekend. Troini dove, tipped and blocked numerous shots. Her long goal kicks set the table for the Fury offense.
