Barbara Byler Saum

Barbara Byler Saum passed away on July 18 in Hollister, following several months of illness. A model of compassion, strength, and elegance, Barbara never wavered from the conviction that, for her, working to raise her family was the most important of her life's tasks and by far her favorite.

Robert R. Leon July 16, 1922 – May 22, 2012

He was born in San Bernardino and lived in Hollister nearly all of his life. He married his wife, Leonore, in 1947 in San Juan Bautista, was a member of Sacred Heart Church and served his country honorably during WWII in the Army Air Corps and was employed with the local cannery for many years.

David A. Vargas

David our beloved brother passed away on November 30, 2006 at home surrounded by his family and friends in San Jose, CA. David is now at peace in heaven after battling a rare form of Cancer for two years called "Peripheral Neuroepithelioma (PNET) Ewing Sarcoma." David was a devoted, caring and loving son to his surviving mother Lupe Vargas and the late Jesse J. Vargas. David is survived by his sisters Gloria Vargas Quiroz and Carmen Vargas. Brother of Bobby Vargas and Albert Vargas. A loving uncle and mentor to Mike Vargas Quiroz III and to his young nephew Jesse J. Vargas. David was a friend to Steve Guillen, a business associate, a friend and brother-in-law to Mike Robert Quiroz II. He was a loving partner to Aurora Pena.

Jeffrey L. Miles

William J. Paterson

For 17 years Bill served on the Gilroy Unified School Board; three times as it's president. In 1973, when he was first elected, he ran as a single issue candidate. He said that the present high school was an embarrassment to the community and that Gilroy needed a new high school. He took colored slides of other high schools in other communities and gave talks to groups all over town.

Susan Ruth Fink

Susan Ruth Fink, 64, passed away peaceful at home surrounded by her family on January 10, 2009. Beloved wife of Donald Fink for 35 years. Loving mother of Susan Baldwin, John Baldwin, Edward Baldwin, Donna Fink, Diane Mancinelli and Tracy Fink. Devoted grandmother of 11 and great-grandmother of 2.

Francesco Franco Gallo

Francesco Franco Gallo died peacefully in his San Jose home on April 13, 2009. Franco was 83-years-old. He is survived by his wife, Giuseppina, sons, Tino and Carmine, four grandchildren, Franceso, Nick, Josephine and Lela, brothers Angelo and Nino, sister Ersilia Iacomini, and two daughters-in-law Donna and Vanessa, and multiple nieces and nephews. He died after an 18-month battle with Esophageal cancer. In his final weeks, Franco was surrounded by family and friends in his beloved home in San Jose. Born in Andretta, in the hills of Southern Italy, his family moved to Ethiopia when he was twelve. From the ages of 16-21, Franco was held in a British concentration camp with other Italians until the end of the World War II. His vision, courage and faith allowed him to see a world beyond the confines of his camp. After returning to Italy, he married his childhood sweetheart, Giuseppina. They lived in Milano where Franco worked as a police officer. In 1956, they moved to America where Franco worked as an engineer for Palo Alto-based Varian Associates for more than thirty years. The family resided in San Jose, CA, a town Franco loved so much, he found it difficult to travel elsewhere, always yearning to return to "the best place on earth."

Ruben Narvaez Jr. December 2, 1962 – June 3, 2016

Walter Jacob Hanna, Jr.

Walter J. Hanna, Jr., 91, passed away peacefully at home Monday, March 9, 2009. He was born in Gilroy on December 15, 1917, the youngest of four children of Walter Jacob and Fannie Sandoe Hanna. He is descended from William Hanna and Thomas Rea, both pioneers of the Gilroy area in the 1850s.
