Uniform switch leaves Acorns shorthanded
A series of unfortunate events spelled trouble for the Live Oak girls soccer team, losing 5-2 against Evergreen Valley on Friday.

Already shorthanded with a 14-girl roster, the Acorns were missing one girl at the start of the game then lost three more when they needed to switch uniforms.

“Evergreen had on the same uniforms so we needed to switch ours,” said coach Tony Vasquez. “Three girls didn’t have their (alternate) uniforms, so we started with 10 players. By the time we had the whole thing settled, we were down 2-0.”

Vasquez said both the goals came with in the first 10 minutes of play as the Acorns opened Blossom Valley Athletic League Mount Hamilton Division play.

“We started slow and out inexperience showed a little bit,” Vasquez said. “We played so pretty unorganized soccer for the first half.”

The loss drops Live Oak to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in league.

The Acorns were able to regain their footing slightly on a goal from Fabi Diaz, who was able to beat the Cougars’ trap defense as she charged up from her center-mid position.

Diaz got the ball through the defenders following a pass from Elena Bongiorno and knocked it into the net.

However, at the end of the half the Acorns were down 3-1.

Live Oak added one more in the second half following a corner kick that Kourtney Kientzy was able to hit off her body for the score.

Evergreen Valley, 4-2 overall and 1-0 in league play, added two more goals to close out the game to win by the final margin.

Live Oak next moves on to face Santa Teresa at home on Wednesday in BVAL action.
