Dear Editor,
It’s ridiculous that this story is news.
Deputy Bruess is a dedicated officer. If a student chooses to mock or make light of this serious program they should accept the consequences of their actions.
Whether Deputy Bruess was wrong or right with his actions is not for us to judge. Indeed, if we were him, our reaction may have been different, but we are not. He has a right to press charges if he wants. That’s the law.
What Chris Smith did was against the law. It is not okay to throw things at people and hit them with your hand or an object. His father may be taking this to the press because Chris is now 18, and this will be on his record.
I believe victims of drunk drivers or the families they leave behind do not find this type of incident or behavior “not a big deal.” I feel they would find it offensive.
This student needs to learn respect. All students need to understand that all actions they take have consequences, not only drinking and driving.
