Dear Editor,

I saw the picture on the Grand Prix downtown bicycle criterium and caption on your website from the April 12 edition.

It got me thinking. Why did you feel the need to describe the subject as “.. .a woman pro”? How about simply “… a pro”?

If you were so concerned about gender, I think the following three words in the caption would have achieved that.

If it were a man, would the caption have read, “A man pro makes his way around the 1.2-mile course”? I greatly doubt that.

You need to come to terms with the 21st century and realize that it really is not that big of a deal that a woman could be a bicycle professional, particularly in Morgan Hill, which is the home of Specialized.

Neal Prey, Morgan Hill

Editor’s note: The gender reference was used to tell readers that men and women professionals took part in the day-long event. Another picture on the front page identified the men racers heading through the downtown.
