The Morgan Hill Times is sponsoring a holiday lights decorating contest. We want to know which homes in our community, Morgan Hill and San Martin, have the best decorations to celebrate the season. First and second-place winners will receive a $50 gift certificate to Rosy’s at the Beach, 17320 Monterey Road, in Morgan Hill.
Please send a photo of your decorated home to ed******@*************es.com by Dec. 27.
We’ll announce the winners Dec. 28. Please include your name, address and phone number on your photo submission, not for publication, but to verify your entry.
Food bank faces shortage of donations for holidays
Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo counties is half way through its Holiday Food and Fund Drive but only a third of the way towards its goal to collect 1.9 million pounds of food and $5 million for food purchases.
Last year, the bank distributed 31 million pounds of food, which touched an average of 163,000 people a month. In 2008 the bank wants to increase distribution by 10 percent and grow its client base by the same amount.
“We established this goal because we’ve identified that there are still thousands of people in our two county service area that are not receiving the food assistance that they need to help them live healthy lives. The majority are families with children and senior citizens,” said Chip Huggins, CEO of Second Harvest. “We have begun a client outreach campaign to make more people aware of our services and now we need to make sure we have the food to distribute to them.”
Michelle Sklar, senior director of development for Second Harvest, asks everyone to support the bank’s goal by making a donation.
“If someone is a previous donor, we are asking them to increase their giving by 10 percent this year, if possible. And if someone is not a donor to the Food Bank I hope they would consider making a gift this year,” Sklar said. “I know finances are tight, but forgoing your morning latte for a week, or brining your lunch to work will yield a savings of $15-20 which could be donated to the food bank and used to feed more hungry people in our community.”
